What should you do as a modern Lebanese woman when you're fed up with all the obnoxious, fat, misogynistic cab drivers in your town? Exactly, you start your own cab company, exclusively for women, by women: Pink Taxi. vpro Metropolis was a video project by Dutch broadcast organisation vpro, that ran from 2008 to 2015. Metropolis is made by a global collective of young filmmakers and TV producers, reporting on remarkable stories from their own country/city. We made a trip around the globe on one single issue: from local beauty ideals to Elvis impersonators, to what's it like being gay, or an outcast or a dog in different cultures. From the outside, the Queens gas station in the city of Sidon, south of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, looks like your typical station, providing all the regular services. The only difference is that it is operated entirely by women. Dressed in pink sweaters and jeans, with some wearing headscarves, the young women greet customers as they fill up tanks. At least a dozen women are employed at the station, and the popularity for this particular niche service is growing. A manager of the station, Samar Dakdouk, said the idea came from an investor who owns several businesses in the city. ''We felt that the idea was nice and we have increased the number of girls working, and because we support women and we know that in this society the men reign, we wanted to show we support the ...

The Beirut Marathon Association is organizing a women's race that will take place on May 26, 2013 in BEIRUT. This event will include 3 races: 10K competitive run, 5K fun run, and 1.5K Run with Mom which will be for women and children under 6 years of age. The BMA will organize this race for women, and only females are eligible to participate. RACE OBJECTIVES: "Empowering Women" through running Portraying a positive and powerful image of Lebanese women, one that negates some of the preconceived stereotypes that the world has of them. When Shula Cohen was arrested for espionage in 1961, Beirut society was shocked. How could such an elegant, classy high society woman turn out to be an Israeli spy? Shulami 'Shula' Cohen was born of Jewish parents in Argentina and grew up in Israel. At 16, she was married off to a wealthy Lebanese Jewish businessman, Josef Kishik, and moved to Beirut. It's not entirely clear how Cohen, codenamed 'The Pearl' became a spy for the Jewish Agency and then for the Israeli intelligence service, Mossad, when it was formed in December 1949. One theory is she'd always wanted to be involved in the building of Israel. Another is that she was recruited in Jerusalem and her marriage to Kishik was a "front". Either way, Cohen carved out a prominent place in the higher echelons of Beirut society and...

I am in Beirut, Lebanon! I am currently interning with an amazing Christian nonprofit to help provide aid and relief for the Syrian Refugee crisis for the summer and am a little over a week in. I primarily work Mon-Thurs and Sunday so the clips are collection from some of the work and my time off. We have been doing a lot of work in churches and refugees camps. The refugee camps I have been to so far have asked us not to take pictures. But I am going to Bekaa Valley tomorrow, the largest Syrian refugee camp in all of Lebanon, for several days to film an organization that will be putting up tents and handing out supplies and hope to post about that soon! with love, elena @elenataber Come say hi: http://bit.ly/elenataber Business Inquiries: email@example.com

SUBSCRIBE: http://www.youtube.com/c/VicStefanu - Let's visit Beirut which is the capital and largest city of Lebanon. Located on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon's Mediterranean coast, Beirut is the country's largest and main seaport. It is one of the oldest cities in the world, inhabited more than 5,000 years ago. The first historical mention of Beirut is found in the ancient Egyptian Tell el Amarna letters dating from the 15th century BC. The Beirut River runs south to north on the eastern edge of the city. Since the end of the war in 1990, the people of Lebanon have been rebuilding Beirut, and by the start of the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict the city had somewhat regained its status as a tourist, cultural and intellectual center in the Middle East and as a centre for commerce, f...

"We'd like to help you," the consul said
"But there's nothing we can do."
"Well, you knew the risks when you took the job.
After all you're not a fool.
So don't call me, don't call me.
I just can't bend the rules.
Keep your chin up, I know it's tough.
Somehoe you'll get through."
It seems the Americans
Can bargain and rescue
But if you get caught
You're left to rot
Under a Beirut, under a Beirut Moon
Under a Beirut Moon
Sorry son, there's nothing we can do
Under a Beirut Moon
Different rules, we haven't got a clue
"We can't be seen to be giving in
To these terrorists you see.
If we talk with them it would mean the end
Of all that we hold dear.
So don't call me, don't call me
I'm doing all I can
Although it seems from where you sit
I don't give a damn."
Back home they'll remember you
In papers, on TV
Because when you're caught
You're left to rot
Under a Beirut, under a Beirut Moon
And though you dream of being free
There's not much hope that I can see
Under a Beirut, under a Beirut Moon
Now just today on the news I saw
A hostage walking free
He talked of how it came about
He gained his liberty
He said, don't give up, don't give up
Argue, beg and plead
Keep the pressure up, don't let it drop
Sometime you'll get free
He said the Americans
Would bargain and rescue
But when Brits get caught
They're left to rot
